should caravans be allowed to travel faster than 60mph when on British motorways?
When in France and Belgium, a caravan can be towed at speeds up to 80mph.

- No - the things are bloody dangerous now - let alone at high speeds !!
- they shoulodn tbe allowed on motorways during daylight hours... banish them to A roads...
- Ermmm! Probably not.
- No,They become unstable at high speeds,Also prone to side winds. 80 mph?More like 80kph.
- A lot of people who tow caravans are not really up to it which gives the people who are a bad name. Ttraining is the name of the game.
- The question here should be: "Would caravans travel at speeds above 60mph if they were allowed to on British motorways?". My experiences of caravans are that hardly any of them manage to even get out of 2nd gear, even when on the motorway!!! Don't even get me started me on caravans on single track roads either... Caravans should most definately just be banned, full stop.
- No! Nor boat trailers. Sorry. You want to take your home with you, just have to accept living at a snail's pace.
- No and they should all be twin axle. This increases stability markedly.
- no
- some people can't control the caravan at 50 never mind 60 mph ,so my answer is it should be 50 mph max speed
- Definitely NOT. They should be limited to 50 to help encourage people to avoid buying them.
- No they should have the speed reduced for caravans to 55mph and every one towing a caravan should be made to sit a test to prove they are capable of towing anything including boats, trailers horse boxes etc and it should be included with the licence,so that no one can purchase a caravan /trailer etc without showing licence and proving that they are capable, and must be restricted to inside lane only with no overtaking allowed
- most modern caravans are fitted with very capable stabiliser brackets which are tested at much higher speeds than 60mph. However on windy days sudden gusts can affect handling. Also poor drivers who cut up caravaners are usually the ones who moan about them all the time, so if I had the choice i would rather tow a caravan a fraction slower than the speed limit for cars to allow for all the bad drivers. So if everyone drove to their speed limits there would be no problem.
- You can only travel at 68mph other than on a toll road and that is in the dry, the French have wet and dry limits "The Speed Limits There are two sets of speed limits in France, one for dry weather, the other for wet. If it's less than two years since you passed your test, the lower wet weather limits apply at all times. Dry Weather Limits: Built-Up Areas: 31 mph (50 kph) Outside Built-Up Areas: 55mph (90kph) Dual Carriageways and Non-Toll Motorways: 68mph (110 kph) Toll Motorways: 80 mph (130 kph) The Paris Ring Road has its own limit of 49 mph (80 kph) Wet Weather Limits: Built-Up Areas: 31 mph (50 kph) Outside Built-Up Areas: 49mph (80kph) Dual Carriageways and Non-Toll Motorways: 62mph (100 kph) Toll Motorways: 68 mph (110 kph) " I find the thought of a caravan at 80mph quite scary, having had one go out of control in front of me on the M6, as for keeping them just on A roads - no, at least you can pass them on a motorway
- no way
- EH !! are you serious 80mph,that would mean 2 changes in the law with regards to driving on a motor way. 1-Maximum speed limit 2-Driving in the right hand lane (overtaking lane) Frankly theres enough plonkers driving without a caravan in the overtaking lane as it is,we don't need anymore nutters. Yeh theres vehicles out there capable of doing these speeds while towing but keep em on the inside lane thats what I say.
